I hoped for a new environment of freedom. That made me join MJC, a new one and probably easier to mold. But, I found out quite quickly that I was wrong. The administration protocol was perhaps too familiar to be comfortable; every ran like a Secondary School, with the staff dominating our lives while we struggle with our curriculum.
My heart sank, but I thought of a solution soon after. I would see to it that the next batch ('dragons') would push for the better. I had such great hopes for them: Universal suffrage with no Admin Intervention; Decisions made by the population;Participation in School events on a fundamental basis. The very show of Direct Democracy.
Just when I thought my dreams could be fulfilled by the new Student Council, I was shocked by the rally speeches: Saxophone playing, singing, rhyming, acting like a psychic and trying to read people's minds etc. I was appalled, of course, at the idiocy of the candidates. How can we trust this heavy responsibility to them? Probably they could act in our annual 'Talentime', but student affairs? I don't think so.
What we need, in my opinion, are people with the heart to serve well in the most constructive way, and not entertain the crowd. The crowd may be amused now, yes, but they will not be happy with you if you cannot solve their problems. Sincerity, in this case, would be most appropriate.
Following the heart and will comes the ability to do it. If one can only think very hard of what to do of people, but are unable to do it, then it defeats the purpose of having them as our leaders. The candidates must show such abilities in their speeches, as they represent the quality of the Student Council. In any case, this is not a 'Meridian Idol' competition, and we do not need clowns.
I know it is hard for candidates to get votes from the large proportion of the crowd who do not even know them. Although ways of attracting votes are mildly acceptable, if one does not place the benefits he brings as the main points, he shall not be known as a Council Member, but Circus stuntsman.
